My dad use to go to church, but he stopped when he married my Mom and started to celebrate Christmas and Easter. I know it is wrong, but I do not know what to do. Can you help?

We are all commanded by God to keep the fifth commandment, which states we are to "Honor our Father and our Mother" (Exodus 20:12). To honor means to behave in a certain way when it comes to your parents. In your case, you must behave respectfully toward your Dad in spite of your opinion that what your Dad is doing is wrong. Do not embarrass or humiliate your Dad publicly or privately. First go to God and pray asking Him to guide your heart and mind in your discussion with your Dad. Ask God to open your Dad's mind to His way. Then approach your Dad and talk to him about your concerns. Give your Dad the facts about Christmas and Easter. Do not go to him with emotions. Should your Dad still believe it is all right to celebrate Christmas and Easter you must not pout, throw a fit or be disrespectful. You can, however, respectfully request not to participate in these celebrations. One's devotion to obeying God takes priority over one's relationship to his/her parent.

Who is Simon and what did he do?

Simon was a common name during New Testament times. Two of Jesus' twelve disciples were named Simon, Jesus had a brother named Simon (Matthew 13:55) and there were several other New Testament people named Simon.
  • One of Jesus' disciples was Simon Peter who was the brother of Andrew. Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter (Matthew 16:17, 18).
  • The other disciple was known as Simon the Cananaean, which means zealot. During Jesus' day, zealots were people who wanted to overthrow the Roman government (Luke 6:15; Mark 3:18).
  • Simon of Cyrene carried Jesus' cross on the way to the crucifixion Matthew 27:32.
  • Simon of Bethany suffered from leprosy. Jesus visited his home (Matthew 26:6-13).
  • There is the Simon who invited Jesus to dinner and didn't like it when Jesus allowed a woman to put expensive ointment on His feet (Luke 7:35-50).
  • Simon Magus was a magician in Samaria (Acts 8:9-24).
  • Simon the tanner lived at Joppa (Acts 9:43-10:23).

My mother says there will be no second chance. She says there is no Biblical proof. Is she right? If not, show me in the Bible where there is proof of a second chance.

Your mother is correct. The Bible says in Hebrews 9:27 "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment." This means we face judgment after death. God is merciful. He has given and will continue to give everyone the opportunity to come to Him. However, for those who reject Christ in their life and as their savior, he will not give a second chance.

If evolution is not true, why is there scientific proof of Neanderthals and other different fazes of man? Isn't there also proof that animals evolve such as the rattle snakes that have smaller rattles to prevent scaring away what little food there is on the island it is located on?

Does evidence really exist linking Apes and Men? Many believe that the ancestry connecting man to apes has been faithfully linked and is now nearly complete. But, is it really? The fact is there are no so-called "missing links" because there are no present links. No ancestor for man has ever been documented.

Even evolutionists themselves reject these so-called intermediates. When a so-called new finding is made the news media i.e. magazines, newspapers and television are quick to report it. When the new findings suddenly do not fit the evolutionist's blueprint a retraction is seldom, if ever, reported. The following list is a summary of so-called "ape-men" that have been claimed as intermediates between man and apes.

Homo sapiens neanderthalensis (Neanderthal man): 150 years ago Neanderthal reconstructions were stooped, very much like an "ape-man." Many now admit the stooped posture was due to disease (such as rickets) and Neanderthals were human, fully able to speak, artistic and religious.

Ramapithecus: Once widely regarded as the ancestor of humans, it has now been recognized as merely an extinct type of orangutan (an ape).

Eoanthropus (Piltdown man): A hoax based on a human skullcap and an orangutan's jaw. For 40 years it was touted as the missing link. It was a very poor forgery.

Hesperopithecus (Nebraska man): Based on a single tooth of a type of pig now living only in Paraguay.

Pithecanthropus (Java man): Now regarded as human and called Homo erectus.

Australopithecus africanus: This was at one time promoted as the missing link. It is very ape-like and evolutionists no longer consider it to be transitional.

Sinanthropus (Peking man): Has now been reclassified as Homo erectus of the human kind.

The following so-called ape-men are on the evolutionary tree today that supposedly trace how Homo sapiens evolved from a chimp-like creature.

Australopithecus: A number of these species have been thought, at times, to be human ancestors. One remains, which is Australopithecus afarensis, known as "Lucy." Detailed studies of the inner ear, skull and bones indicate "Lucy" and her like are not part human transitions.

Homo habilis: There is a growing consensus among most palaeoanthropologists that this is a "junk" category. It actually includes bits and pieces of various other types, such as Australopithecus and Homo erectus. It is therefore an "invalid taxon." Such a creature never existed. This was formerly claimed as the "clear link" between apes and humans but it is no longer valid.

Homo Erectus: Many remains of this type have been found around the world. This classification now includes Java man (pithecanthropus) and Peking man (sinanthropus), which were once promoted as "missing links." Their skulls have prominent brow ridges similar to Neanderthals; their bodies were just like those of people today only robust. The brain size is within the range of people today and studies of the middle ear have shown Homo erectus walked just like us. Both morphology and associated archaeological/cultural findings in association suggest Homo erectus was fully human and should be included in Homo sapiens.

No evidence exists in the fossil record to show that man evolved from apes. There are no missing links because they never existed. Adam was the first man; the second man was the Lord from heaven. Genesis 2:7; I Corinthians 15:47. Because there is no evidence for the evolution of man, there is no reason to believe animals or anything else evolved. Animals may adapt to their environment, but that is not evolution.

I have heard that Michael and Christ are the same person. Is this true?

No, Michael is not Christ. Michael is an archangel whose name means "Who is like God?" He is described in the book of Daniel as the guardian of God's people. He fights both the wicked and Satan. You can read about him in Daniel 10:10-21; Jude 9; Revelation 12:7.

According, to the Bible, does a priest have to join a couple in marriage? What specifically make a marriage official?

There is not a specific scripture one can turn to that would prove a priest must perform a wedding ceremony to make it legal. However, marriage ceremonies have legal requirements based on the state, province or country one lives in. Every state in the United States requires a license to legalize marriage. Just as a couple is required to have a marriage license, an individual performing the marriage must have the necessary credentials. People who usually hold such credentials are ministers, priests, justices of the peace or captains of a ship. With this said, there are distinct Biblical teachings on what constitutes marriage in the eyes of God.

The specific teachings are found in Ephesians 5:31-33. The Biblical definition of marriage is 1) "a man shall leave his father and mother," The man publicly promises to give himself to his wife. 2) "and be united to his wife" Both the man and woman take responsibility for the welfare of the other. They promise to love each other above all others. 3) "the two will become one flesh." They become one flesh through the intimacy of the sexual union, which is reserved for marriage and the lifelong commitment they make to one another.

One of the most important steps a man and woman will ever make is a commitment to their marriage. There isn't a man or organization that can stand between man and God. At the marriage ceremony, when a man and woman come together before friends and family, they are making a vow to each other and God. It is God who blesses their commitment to each other, not the man performing the ceremony.

What are some good Bible chapters to introduce Christianity to friends?

As you share the gospel, which is the Good News about Jesus Christ, do not do it in a way that your friend feels pressured. Be sure your friend knows your friendship is not based on his or her faith. Above all be patient with your friend and remember it is impossible for anyone to come to Christ unless the Father calls him (John 6:44, 65). Scriptures about salvation are a good place to start along with an understanding of what salvation is. Below is a short definition.

Salvation is the means by which God, through Christ saves man from the penalty of sin and gives him eternal life. Salvation is a freely given gift from God through grace, with our ultimate reward being according to our works.

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

John 1:12 "But as many as received Him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name."

Acts 16:31 "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household."

Romans 10:13 "Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."

Titus 3:5 "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit."

Ephesians 2:8, 9 "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast."

The sacrifice of Jesus Christ is the focal point of the salvation process. He was "put to death for our trespasses and raised for our justification" (Romans 4:25). "We were reconciled to God by the death of his Son" (Romans 5:10). And are thereby "justified through faith..."(Romans 5:1). A Christian is admonished to "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 2:5).

In short, salvation is by grace, through faith, not earned by obedience but dependent upon obedience, with the degree of our ultimate reward being based on works.

What does the Bible say about hallucinogenic drugs and also the use of marijuana?

There are no specific scriptures one may turn to about hallucinogenic drugs or marijuana. However, the Bible is a book of principles and it is the responsibility of each individual to adhere closely to the principles of Christ. In applying God's laws to everyday cares, everything one does should be done as if under the scrutiny of Christ. "Whatsover you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus…" (Colossians 3:17). A godly way of life must include basic aspects of physical health. One should take care to avoid any form of bodily injury, which would include intoxication and or drunkenness. We are told in I Corinthians 10:31 "Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

If when people die, they don't go to heaven but "they are simply dead," then what is the point of going to church and following God's commands?

The goal of every Christian is to be saved from the death penalty of sin through the sacrifice of Christ. It is also to receive the gift of eternal life in God's Family and Kingdom.

The salvation process is by "grace." God's grace. It is unmerited and freely given by God and can in no way, be earned. (Ephesians 2:8)

However, a Christian must strive to be obedient because continual sin that is not repented of will disqualify one from God's Kingdom. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

When Christ was asked what must be done to be saved, His answer was that the commandments must be kept. (Matthew 19:17) Christ told His disciples that at the resurrection He shall "reward every man according to his works." (Matthew 16:27; Revelation 22:12)

Where geographically is Jabez? (1 Chronicles 2:55)

It was a place inhabited by "the families of scribes" apparently in Judah. The place Jabez is not mentioned anywhere else in the Bible. Today this could be Judea.

According to the Bible, were there actually 120 IN the upper room on the day of Pentecost?

In Acts 1:15 we read about the days prior to Pentecost. It appears that the 120 were in the upper room with the disciples.

Please give me Biblical proof that Jesus is God.

Jesus Christ as the "Word of God" (John 1:1) has existed with God the Father from eternity. Christ and the Father made a plan together to have their family grow by means of the human creation. This creation was accomplished by the One who became Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. "For by Him [Christ] were all things created that are in heaven and that are in the earth, visible and invisible." (Colossians 1:16). Christ, the "Word of God" is the Creator God who breathed the breath of life in Adam. He is the One who walked with Noah and talked to Abraham and Moses (John 8:58; Exodus 3:14). In order to fulfill the master plan of salvation, this great Being divested Himself of all His power, might and majesty and took upon himself "the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men." (Philippians 2:7).

What is the meaning of the story of Lazarus and the beggar?

The meaning of the story of Lazarus and the rich man is to show that wealth does not equate with having righteous character. Lazarus, the poor man and crippled beggar, was not righteous because he was poor, but rather because he trusted in God.

Doesn't Acts 10:15 say all animals are good to eat? If not, please explain.

No, Acts 10:15 does not say all animals are good to eat.
In Acts 10:9-22, Peter had a vision or a dream. The lesson Peter learned from the vision was that he was not to call any man impure or unclean. Because Jews kept the law of clean and unclean food (Leviticus 11) it was difficult for Jews to eat with the Gentiles who did not abide by the same laws. His vision taught him not to look upon the Gentile as inferior to the Jew. In the end, Peter understood that everyone has an opportunity for salvation in Jesus Christ.

Was Adam really deceived by the serpent?

It would be easy to say that he was, but in reading Genesis 3:6 it appears he was led by his wife. Adam was the Covenant head, God put him in charge. Even though Eve ate first, Adam did not have to follow her. Adam in fact, should have instructed his wife in what could and could not be eaten. In the last half of verse 6 we are told, "she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat." It appears that Adam was right there when Eve was deceived, but failed to take the responsibility of leadership. He then proceeded to put the blame on God by saying, "The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat." (Genesis 3:12)

Why were the Israelites not allowed to wear clothes mixed with both linen and wool?

Leviticus 19:19 says "...Nor shall a garment of mixed linen and wool come upon you." The idea is that the distinctions that God ordained in Creation are to be preserved. Not mixing wool and linen was perhaps an effort to reduce adulteration of a good product. Pure cloth is the best for overall wearability. Even today, the most expensive clothing is pure. God wants us to have the very best.

Please explain Malachi 1:2-3. How can God love Jacob and hate Esau?

The Hebrew words for loved and hated do not refer to God's emotions. Instead these words are an example of God making a choice. He chose one over the other to make a covenant with.

Why isn't a woman suppose to preach?

In 1 Timothy 2:11-15 Paul described godly conduct for women. Women are to receive their instruction from the men who are leaders in the church. Peter said, "... a gentle quiet spirit which is very precious in the sight of God" (1 Peter 3:$). The word "silent" in 1 Timothy 2:11 does not mean a woman cannot say anything. It does mean to be settled, not unruly. 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 also says that women are to be silent in the church.

Who was Nebuchadnezzar?

Nebuchadnezzar was the King of Babylon. For three years Judah paid their taxes to him. He took King Jehoiachin prisoner along with important citizens. Nebuchadnezzar made Zedekiah King of Judah. King Zedekiah rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar. So, Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem and the people were taken into exile in Babylon. Daniel was one who was taken captive. Daniel was able to explain the meaning of Nebuchadnezzar's dreams and was made his chief advisor. Nebuchadnezzar's success made him proud. God humbled him through a strange madness. When his sanity returned Nebuchadnezzar glorified God.

If a person dies before he/she knows the truth about God, will he/she be lost forever?

Every human being who has ever lived shall have an opportunity for the greatest free gift that could ever be imagined. God wants all mankind to receive the opportunity for salvation (1 Timothy 2:4) and is "not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). God is very patient and has given a time for all human beings from all times to be called to Him and to the ultimate gift of eternal life in the Family of God.

When is the Year of Jubilee?

The Jubilee Year stated the every 15th year all land must be given back to the original owner. When these laws actually operated is unknown. Therefore, it cannot be said what year the next Year of Jubilee is. This system did not operated successfully under kings. King Ahab of Israel, as an example, put to death his subject Nabath so he could take his property.

How should we present our prayers to the Lord?

Prayer is man's personal communication with God. When one prays, he utters verbally of mentally his praise of God, his thanks for God's blessing, and also his requests from God for himself and for others. Prayers are an offering to God; they are described as incense stored in golden bowls before God's throne (Revelation 5:8). Prayers are not mere repetitions or imposed or stylized, but rather heartfelt, personal communication with the Creator, analogous to communication with an intimate personal friend. In prayer, we share our hopes, dreams, frustrations, needs and desires as we would with our physical father. Read Matthew 6:5-15 for Jesus' instructions regarding prayer. Our attitude is critical in determining how God reacts to our prayers. Read Isaiah 59:21 and Isaiah 57:15.

Does the Bible say what the punishment would be if someone assaulted a pregnant woman? Also, if a woman's life is in danger is it more important to save a fruit-bearing woman by aborting the child so that the woman may live to continue to be fruitful?

Exodus 21:22 says that if a man injures a pregnant woman he would be fined according to the judges. If however the child should die, the man who caused this would be put to death (Exodus 21:23). If the woman were to die he would be put to death (Genesis 9:6).

When a mother's life is in danger it is more important to save the mother's life over the child's. This decision is only after everything has been tried; prayer, anointing, and medical help. It is especially important when the mother already has other children. God would not want those children to be left without a mother.

How long was Noah on the ark? How can it be determined scripturally?

Noah was on the ark for 377 days. This number is gathered from the following: Genesis 7:24 says "The waters flooded the earth for 150 days." Forty of these days it was raining (Genesis 7:4, 12). This number is confirmed in Genesis 8:4-19. By determining the number of days in the months given in the Bible (Genesis 7:11 and 8: 13-14), it can be said that Noah was in the ark for 377 days.

Is Saturday the Sabbath day and why?

Saturday is the Sabbath day because it is the 7th day of the week. The Sabbath was established by God at creation week (Genesis 2:1-3). It was made for man, reaffirmed by Jesus (Mark 2:27-28), taught by the apostles and kept down through the centuries by faithful Christians. Exodus 16 shows the great importance God places on a specific period of time for the Sabbath. Exodus 20:8 is the fourth commandment from God to keep the Sabbath. The argument that Christians today need not do what Jesus Himself did and taught is refuted in Matthew 28:20.

Who was Abraham?

Abraham is called the father of the Israelites. Because of his deep faith in God, he is the spiritual father of all Christians. Before God changed his name to Abraham, his name was Abram. You can read his story in Genesis 12-25.

Isaiah was the prophet who walked around naked for 3 years. Read Isaiah 20:2-3.

If Adam and Eve were sinless, then why did Eve believe the serpent's lies?

Man was created physical, mortal and limited so that God could work with and prepare him for his ultimate destiny. God's moral character is self-determined by His own free choice. If man is to be like Him and share eternity on His level, he must also be free to decide and thus to build his own character.

What were Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego's names originally and why were they changed?

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were dragged into captivity at the beginning of their manhood. They were put in a position to conform to Nebuchadnezzar's pagan society. To begin their preparation in this pagan society, Nebuchadnezzar changed their names. He wanted these young men to forget God. Each of the men's names, given to them at birth, contained the name God. There names were Hanaiah (God is gracious), Misheal (Who is as God) and Azariah, (God is helped).

Changing their names would not make them forget their Creator. It did not matter what others called them. Their actions were what mattered. They stood firm, obeyed God and put their lives in His hands. If you would like to learn more about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, read Daniel 1:6-7.

Why is it wrong to go to the Mardi Gras parades and to celebrate Christmas? My dad says that these are pagan holidays and that God does not want us to celebrate them, but I don't understand why they are so wrong.

Your dad is correct. Those are pagan holidays. If you're a Christian, one who follows Christ and does as He did, you will not do the traditions of men. In Colossians 2:8 it says, "Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ." Look up Christmas in the Encyclopedia. It will tell you more about Christmas being a pagan holiday.

Who named the books in the Bible and why?

The Bible has an Old Testament and a New Testament. The Old Testament has 39 books and is in 4 sections.
1.The Law- which is the first five books of the Bible. The Jews named these books.
2. The History Books- This covers the largest part which are the books Joshua to Esther. The names given to these books are either the name of the person the book is about or the author of the book.
3. This Wisdom Books- are Job, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes.
4. The Prophets- There are 17 books in this section. Sixteen of the books are named by the prophet whose words they contain.

The New Testament has 27 books and is in 3 sections.
1. The Gospels and Acts telling of Jesus Christ and New Testament histories.
2. The Letters are Romans through Jude.
3. Revelation.
If you look at the beginning of each of these books, majority of them will tell you who wrote them. For example, 1 Corinthians is the first epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians.

In Genesis 1:27 it is written "So God created human beings, making them to be like himself. He created them male and female." In Genesis 2:7 it is written "The Lord God took soil from the ground and formed a man out of it..." I don't understand how then that Adam was the first human being.

Human life in general is referred to in Genesis 1:27. We learn that the "image" of God was only given to humans. Then in Genesis 2:7, detail is given in describing how God formed man. Just as an artist would describe how he created his work of art. When reading the Bible, it is important to understand that it cannot be read straight through like a book. Instead, we have to take pieces from all over the Bible to understand what happened.

What was Moses' wife's name?

Moses was married to Zipporah (Exodus 18:2).

Who were the Virgin Mary's parents? Did Mary have children with Joseph? Was Jesus married? If so, to whom? Who are Jesse and Elizabeth? Were they before or after Jesus' time?

The Bible does not tell us who the Virgin Mary's parents were. Mary did have children with Joseph. Their names were James, Joses, Simon and Judas (Matthew 13:55). Jesus never married. Jesse was the Grandson of Ruth and Boaz. He was father to King David (1 Samuel 16-17). Elizabeth was the wife of Zechariah. She became pregnant with John the Baptist before Mary became pregnant with Jesus. Mary and Elizabeth were relatives (Luke 1). They were both before Jesus' time.

What did the bride and groom wear in Biblical times?

In Biblical times, the bride would wear a veil and dress. She would wear jewelry which had been given to her by the groom. Occasionally, the groom would give the bride a headband of coins. Once married, the bride was taken to the groom's parents' home for a feast. Their friends were also invited. The friends at the wedding would be dressed in their best clothing. For further reading on weddings, look up: Genesis 24;29; Judges 14; Matthew 22:2-14, 25:1-12; Luke 14:7-14; John 3:1-10; Revelation 21:2

What is the policy of the church on ear/ body/ bellybutton piercings? What does the bible say on such things?

In applying God's law to the everyday cares and pursuits of life involve the continuing and conscious recognition that 1)Christianity is a way of life and 2)everything we do as Christians should be done as if under the scrutiny of Christ (Colossians 3:17).
The church teaches the biblical principal of modesty. Balance, good taste, quality and modesty are stressed in the use of all clothing and bodily decoration. How a person looks and what he wears is a personal matter. However, we should all attire ourselves in such a way as to be presentable to Christ. In 1 Corinthians 10:31 we are told "Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." It is not the job of the church to police the members' personal lives.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit and are not to be violated. Ezekiel 16:10 tells about how God adorned Israel. When making a body piercing decision, bear in mind the customs of the times, does it look normal, avoid extremes and use common sense.

Is it wrong to date people of another race?

No, it is not wrong to date people of another race. If you become romantically involved and your dating turns to marriage plans, there are important issues to consider. A wise marriage is one where both people are suited for each other. Compatibility may be determined by consideration of the many different traits of personality, cultural background, intellect and character.

If Adam and Eve hadn't eaten of the Tree of Good and Evil, would they have lived forever and would there be sin in the world?

Satan introduced sin to mankind through Adam and Eve. They were created neutral, not to favor good or evil. Adam and Eve were deceived by Satan into disobeying God's command that they must not eat of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. In turn, all since Adam and Eve (except Jesus) have sinned. By sinning we have brought about the death penalty for our own sins. Romans 5:12 tells us this. It wasn't until Adam and Eve made the wrong choice that sin entered the world. So, if they had made the right choice, the story of Adam and Eve may have been different.

How did Noah finish the ark in seven days?

Noah didn't finish the ark in seven days. In Genesis 6:3 it tells us that it took him 120 years!! You may ask, why so long? Well, God was allowing the people of Noah's day to change their sinful ways in 120 years. They didn't, so God flooded the world.

How can it be right for Cain to have his sister for his wife?

In Genesis 1:28 God says to Adam and Eve "Be fruitful and multiply . . ." Cain was the son of Adam and Eve. The only other people on the earth were his brothers and sisters. In order for them to multiply, they had to marry one another.

How did Cain get his wife?

The Bible tells us about Cain's family in Genesis 4:16-26. Genesis 5:4 says that Adam "begot sons and daughters." The Bible is not specific about how Cain chose his wife. We do conclude that his wife was his sister by reading Genesis 5:4.

What kinds of games did kids play during Bible Times?

There are a few games mentioned in the Bible such as music and dance. (Jeremiah 31:4,13,14; Luke 15:25)
In the Old Testament, riddles are referred to. (Judges 14:12-18; Proverbs 1:5,6; Ezekiel 17:2)
Archaeologist have found board games. The games appear to have been difficult. Chess is a very old game, it may have been played. There are old carvings that show boys playing tug of war and girls juggling balls.
In the New Testament, there are references to Greek footraces. (1 Corinthians 9:24-27; 2 Timothy 2:5) Some other contests done were chariot races, throwing the disc or javelin, wrestling, boxing and horse races.

Who is God?
